Monsanto Unveils New "EverMild" Sweet Onions

This new onion is modeled after the famous Vidalia sweet onion from Georgia.

Monsanto has big plans when it comes to coming up with fruits and vegetable that tastes phenomenal... including sweet grape tomatoes  and super sweet honeydew melons.

Monsanto says the onion is neither organic nor genetically modified - it is the result of more than twelve years of cross-pollinating different plant breeds to arrive at the right proprietary blend of sweetness.

The EverMild is being rolled out only in St. Louis-area Schnucks this year, but Monsanto has no intentions of selling the seed to local farmers. The EverMild is a "long-day" onion that grows best in a more northern climate. It is harvested in September and sold through March, thus positioned as a winter stand-in for the Vidalia, which is only available from April to September.

Some believe Monsanto is trying to capture the market for those counting "food miles," the environmental cost of delivering food from farm to fork. I personally, like the idea of consuming onions grown in this country rather than South America... and supporting our American farmers.

I salute Monsanto for adding yet another onion for those of us who love them.... I can't wait to try them!
